Human Rights Day is celebrated on 10th December annually. On this day, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. It is a milestone document that states the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being regardless of race, gender, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. It includes the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more.
This year the theme of Human Rights Day relates to ‘Equality’ and Article 1 of the UDHR – “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” The principles of equality and non-discrimination are at the heart of human rights. This includes addressing and finding solutions for deep-rooted forms of discrimination that have affected the most vulnerable people in societies, including women and girls, indigenous peoples, people of African descent, LGBTI people, migrants and people with disabilities, among others.
A special assembly video was uploaded to highlight the importance of human rights to create awareness among the students. The video shed light on the different rights that each individual is entitled to as a human being.
